Tuesday

This morning was Signore Gianni's last breakfast here before his departure. Waiting for toast is a daily ritual - the toaster is most likely circa 1940's, we estimate.  It works perfectly fine but takes a little while to put it mildly.. Fiske worked in his studio while I did a final laundry in preparation of Friday's departure.

Lunch was great - pasta with pesto - pesto is from Liguria, so everyone enjoys it as much as possible. After lunch, it was still quite gloomy here in Bogliasco but Fiske spotted sunshine way down the coast so we decided to drive that way.  We took the autostrada for about half an hour or so, through many, many tunnels burrowing through the mountains and arrived in Sestri Levante.  The sun was out and Sestri Levante was beautiful - right on the bay, just up the coast from Cinque Terre.

The cafes and shops were all busy and the entire town looked wonderful to us.  We parked and walked to both beaches - one on each side of the bay.  The main thoroughfare is pedestrian only, so we walked that, stopping in another beautiful children's clothing store.  Italians' sense of beautiful fabrics and style goes all the way down to the way they dress their children.  I am always amazed at the beauty and elegance of the clothing for the tiniest of babies. We stopped for a coffee at a beachside cafe before heading back on the autostrada for Bogliasco. An interesting tidbit, Marconi performed some of his earliest wireless experiments from a hotel on the point, owned by friends.

Tonight we decided to go into Genoa with a few other people for dinner at an historical fish restaurant, right on the sea.  It is located at the spot where Garibaldi set sail in his quest for the unification of Italy. The wood-paneled restaurant reminded us all of a ship inside and the food - almost all fish, was very good.  Not sure what some of them were but they tasted good!
